With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Lila K. Slate (née Lemmond), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Lila was born on June 15, 1939, in Charlotte, NC, and departed from us on June 24, 2026. A compassionate and humble individual, Lila was a beacon of love and kindness, lighting up the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Lila was a smart and dedicated educator, having devoted 30 years of her life to teaching at Matthews Elementary School. Her love for imparting knowledge was only surpassed by her love for her family, which was her everything. Lila was a firm believer in the power of education, a belief she nurtured by earning her college degree from High Point College. A woman of immense faith, Lila was a lifelong member of Matthew United Methodist Church. As it is written in the Gospel of Matthew, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). Lila exemplified this verse in all her actions, her light shining brightly in the lives of the many students she taught and the family she cherished.
Lila is survived by her loving husband, Tony Slate; her son, Eric Slate (Denise); grandsons, Joshua, Caleb, Jacob, and Adam Slate (Kassidy); and her sister, Gayle Lemmond. She is also survived by her step-granddaughter, Ashley Reynolds (Scoville) and their newborn daughter, Eloise. She is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Kathryn Lemmond. A celebration of Lila's life will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 11:00 am at Matthews United Methodist Church, followed by interment at Sharon Memorial Park.
Lila's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, faith, and family. We invite you to share your memories of Lila and upload photos to the memorial page as we remember and honor a remarkable woman who touched so many lives with her kindness and humility.
